Side view mirrors are one of important automobile parts which are installed on the both outsides of a car;
they help a driver to secure his left and right view.
However, conventional side view mirrors’ motor driving system is not sufficient or has no function to control a motor,
depending on the circumstances if the motor can normally drive or not.
IK Semicon who is the automotive IC specialty company, released IK8509 which is a power folding motor drive IC.
It has excellent protection functions, and it has QFN 16 leads package type,
and it was specially designed for automotive parts so achieved AEC-Q100 certification.
This product is designed to check, if the motor operation is under a normal circumstance or not.
In order to doing it monitors currents and voltages which are supplied to the motor, and counts folding unfolding time.
Based on the monitoring data, IK8509 can stop or keep operating the motor.
As you can see in this graph, the current of a motor in a stall status increases when the voltage goes up,
and it decreases when the voltage goes down.
This is the unique feature of any motors.
Conventional type power folding solution, in other words the discrete components solution which has resistors or capacitors to setup the stall current threshold,
can have a just flat threshold current regardless of motor operation voltage.
In this case, the threshold is too low compared to stall current at high operation voltage range,
hence there is a very narrow allowable operating area so that the motor cannot operate at a high current.
In addition, the threshold is over than stall current at the low operation voltage range, so it is dangerous because of overheating.
Because of this overheating, user prefer using motors which has higher stall current specification,
therefore the cost of motor can be increase additionally.
IK8509 has no problem about the threshold, because it was designed to have the same gradient of real stall current
and just a little less threshold than stall current.
Therefore, maximum 2.5A stall current motor can operate regardless of any operation voltage range.
In addition, IK8509 integrates many components into one IC, it reduces its prime cost and makes a very simple PCB schematics.
Less components in PCB, which means less defect rate.
In addition, IK8509 has excellent protection functions, such as stall current limitation, time limitation,
over temperature protection, over and under voltage lockout, supply voltage transient protection.
